Books came in the mail yesterday! Two books, separate publishers, separate orders at separate times, and yet a wonderful rightness because they're both by people I know somewhat in the real world but better through LJ. The books were "Unwelcome Bodies" by jenwrites, and "Cloud & Ashes" by nineweaving, and I heartily recommend both authors, and will recommend the books as soon as I delve deeper into them so I can say it with more truth than anticipation.

For kestrell, this is my interpretation of the cover of "Cloud & Ashes"...
The background is an rough stone sky, very close to the chrysocolla sample that nineweaving showed, but could be made of crushed malachite and azurite mixed together, and throw in some lapis lazuli, too. The shades run into each other unsmoothly as if overlapping layers of deep-space nebulae at different lightyear distances. Patterns of short parallel white lines (a time-lapsed photograph of a meteor shower?) are overlaid, defining a woman's side-turned face and flowing hair by where the lines are missing.  On the back of the cover, some of the lines are in a different direction, parallel to each other but not the rest, and those form the shape of a white bird flying away. And all of this could be an underwater scene, too: the blue'd greens and shadowed near-black blues of an underwater landscape fathoms deep, with schools of tiny silver-white fish caught at exactly the right time to make the patterns.

Thank you! It's a beautiful cover. (*whispers* but also? I liked your sketch for the cover better)
