Plays Well With Others

who the hell invented see-saws?
some grown-up who went by visuals
and not the dirty reality that's child’s play
this bipolar device of ups and downs
the passive-aggressive confrontation of face to face
down the length of the board
eyes meeting or avoiding the realizations of control
of weight and balance and who leaves first
and who is left to fall
swings are better
cooperative “I’ve got your back” pushing
where you can pretend you could have done it
all on your own
and then find out you have to
but the swing still swings as high
the board stays still
and you’re left on the ground (somehow always wet and cold)
with the smell of rotting wood
