Economies and Scale

I am confused. Once upon a time, I thought that the way you marketed things was to either offer a lot of luxury for a high price, or the bare minimum for a low price and then charge for any extras.

Hotels seem to work the opposite.  Because of college searches, we've stayed at numerous mid-priced motels/hotels recently, but it's this high-priced one that charges for using the internet.   It also has a coffee maker in the bathroom, a standard feature.  But the coffee cups and filters and packets are part of the stocked items under the TV, along with the stuff in the mini-fridge.  I'm going to have to talk to the desk because I didn't read the sign in time and moved one of the coffee cups, thinking of using it for tea (I brought my own tea bags, so there!) and washing it and returning it, but it turns out that moving any item will get you charged for it because they're on a base that senses movement electronically.  Cool system.  Lousy hospitality.  I do not want to pay $4 for using their coffee cup.  I can't imagine anyone wanting to pay $4 for a frigging cup of coffee anyway.  Oh, and if you take things out of the mini-fridge to make room for your own stuff, they can charge you $25 for a "re-stocking fee" even if you can prove you didn't use any of it.

I had tea in a water glass.

What people in Boston can feel good about:   I noticed the prices at various Shell gas stations as the airport shuttle van got closer to downtown SF.  Regular went from $3.96 to $4.10 to $4.20.   I didn't fill up the car at home before I left because the price had just gone up to all of $3.28 a gallon at our local Shell.

Not all the hotels have that system, but yes, it is annoying. Are you enjoying your stay otherwise?

I am! And very glad I've been going to the gym the last couple of months, and very, VERY glad I've been using the ellipical trainer the last couple of weeks. I didn't do enough inclines on the treadmill obviously! Now I am back at the hotel munching on flat fortune cookies as my legs recover from my first day out and about. :-)
