Saray Turkish Restaurant, West Haven, CT

I'd promised a review of this restaurant, so here it is.

Saray Turkish Restaurant, West Haven, Connecticut

The location is easy to get to, and there's off-street parking, which is a big plus for the area.   The restaurant itself is of medicum size, very nicely decorated, and has standard tables except for one large benched area that seats 8 to 12 people, depending on how closely you want to crowd together.   They don't have a liquor license but you're allowed to bring your own wine.

This would be a better review if I'd been in a party of that size but since it was just me, I only tried two menu items.  The first was the Gavurdagi Salad of tomatoes, green peppers, onions, garlic, parsley, and walnuts.  The finely chopped walnuts were in a pomegranate syrup drizzled over the main salad, but unfortunately the main salad dressing was so strongly acidic that I found it difficult to pick up any other flavor.   Even the small version was very large and could easilly have served 8 if it accompanied other appetizers, and with other appetizers I suspect it would have felt refreshing instead of too sharp.

For an entree, I'd wanted to try their Doner Kebab (a restaurant specialty), but they were out.  Instead I went with the Adana Kebab-Pirzola (Lamb Chops) combo.   The Adana Kebab is seasoned ground beef formed into chunks and grilled on skewers.  It was nicely spicy without being "hot".   The two lamb chops were very well flavored, but very thin and done to almost crispness.  There were two rice side dishes: a plain long-grained rice pilaf very much like any packaged mix, and a more interesting reddish short-grained rice with bits of indeterminate somethings in it.    The other accompaniments were a grilled long green pepper and two grilled plum tomatoes, all of which helped to spark up the bland pilaf.

Overall?  Go with a group and mix and match dishes.  And have dessert.  I didn't, but it's supposedly very good.
